Points of Interest

Since it just was a 15-20 minute walk toward the center of town from where I had the apartment, I did most of my exploration on foot. One of the first places I saw was hill with a flag flying above it. It was Santa Lucia Hill. Here are a few pictures. Going to it and up on it has 'students' swarming around foreigners to ask for a little money. To me it got a little uncomfortable, and I did not linger very long. I gave $10 equivalent to a girl who showed me her (or someone's) class schedule and said that she was just barely getting by. Maybe so. Hard to tell. To minimize being targeted I went on toward the Plaza De Armas rather quickly, and there were no more youngsters looking for handouts there. The National Library is right next to the Hill.

The Chilean National Library.

Looking in direction of La Moneda, there is the Convent of San Franciso de Alameda, across the street.

The museum was closed at the time and only the wooden statue of San Francisco was inside in the entrance area. I settled for that.

Construction of the church itself was started in 1586, bu the current clock tower is much newer and was finished in 1857. Here one of the side passages and there one can see that it's a restoration in progress.
